Dr. Juraj Krajcovic is a Professor of Molecular biology at the Department of Genetics at the Faculty of Natural Sciences, Comenius University in Bratislava, Slovakia. 1997-2011 he was a director of the Institute of Cell Biology and Biotechnology there. He received his PhD. from Comenius University in 1987. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the International Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology in Brussels, Belgium (1990-1993). His favorite research object/model organism is the flagellate Euglena gracilis. In this respect he has had a long lasting collaboration with Wolfgang Löffelhardt, Vienna, Austria; Erhard Stutz, Neuchatel, Switzerland; Steven D. Schwartzbach, Lincoln, NE, USA/Memphis, TN, USA; Reinhold G. Herrmann, Munich, Germany; William Martin, Duesseldorf, Germany. Current Research Interests: Molecular cell biology; gene structure and expression; protein import into organelles, primarily chloroplasts; molecular diagnostics; molecular evolution, DNA identification of microorganisms, especially lactic acid bacteria and phototrophs; plastids as drug targets; the origin and evolution of the cell; antimutagenicity; extremophiles, algae as photobioreactors. Teaching activities: Molecular cell biology, Evolutionary biology; Selected chapters in microbiology; Selected chapters in biotechnology; Molecular methods in systematic biology.
