Professor Kevan Gartland is currently Dean of the School of Life Sciences. After degrees in Genetics (BSc, Leeds) and PhD in Molecular Biology (Nottingham) he was British Technology Group Research Fellow (Nottingham University), before taking up a Lectureship in Biotechnology & Molecular Biology at De Montfort University. Senior Lectureship, Head of Division and Associate Head of School posts followed, as did a Personal Research Chair in Biological Sciences at the University of Abertay Dundee, where he established a thriving research group in applications of the biosciences to the environment. This culminated in his being Founding Director of the Abertay Centre for the Environment (ACE), receiving £2.4M EU funds and taking an entrepreneurial approach to the uses of the biosciences to meet the needs of businesses. He has previously been a Heads of University Biological Sciences Executive Committee member, Education Committee Chair and a Director of the Biochemical Society, and a Director of the Institute of Forest Biotechnology, based in North Carolina, USA and is currently Chair of the Higher Education Academy Biosciences Subject Centre Advisory Group, and a Fellow of the Society of Biology. He is frequently in demand as a reviewer and adviser on applications of the molecular biosciences, quality assurance and new course developments.
